How to Create Your Own Website

You can easily create your own website - it is not expensive.

There are three basic steps.

First, you need a domain name for your site, eg www.yourwebsite.org.uk. Many companies will register your name for you; I use ukreg.com, who charge £8 for 2 years for .uk domains, and £10 per year for .com names. You may already have a free name from your ISP (Internet Service Provider), eg www.ispname.co.uk/yourname.

Second, you need access to a computer which is permanently connected to the internet - this will usually be a computer belonging to a hosting company. I use Fasthosts, who provide a basic hosting packagae for £23.50 a year. Again, your ISP may offer free web hosting.

Finally, you need the web pages themselves, written in HTML (Hyper-Text Mark-up Language). Several computer programs will create exciting web pages for you, but how long will they take to download? Will your website's visitors wait that long? Or you can create simpler web pages in a word processor and save them as HTML. However, pages produced by either method are unlikely to display properly on different size screens and on different browsers, and they are very unlikely to print properly on A4 pages. That is why you are advised to employ a web designer. (Well, I would say that, wouldn't I?)
